CJ8 coordinated verb/adjective phrases with or, but not

Intervention outline

 You will need:

  • SHAPE CODING app or laminated shapes: 1 large and 2 small ovals, hexagons, clouds and is/are diamond.
  • Black and white pictures for colouring.
  • Small figures and toys, e.g. animals, characters, people, vehicles, furniture.
  • Photos or photocards for object/ people description.

App settings: Turn on:

Intervention steps:

  1. ‘but not’  (Verb Phrase) 
  1. Introduce template with ‘but not’:
  • Relate coordinated VP to the question “What doing?”. Discuss how ‘but not’ means subject does only the first, not the second verb phrases (shown by the cross) even though it would be possible for both to co-occur.  
  • Take turns to produce sentences using ‘but not’ while the other one acts out the sentence  
  • Make combinations of the templates using coordinated subjects and/or verbs e.g.:
  • “The cow but not the cat is lying down but not sliding. “
  • Take turns to create sentences matching these combined templates, while the other person acts out sentence .
  • When accurate, remove templates; bring back to check responses.

  1. ‘but not’  (Adjective Phrase) 
  1. Introduce template with ‘but not’ :

  • Relate coordinated AP to the question: “What like?”. Discuss how ‘but not’ means that the sentence subject only has features of the first, not the second adjective (shown by the cross) even though it would be possible for both to co-occur.  
  • Take turns to produce sentences using ‘but not’ while the other one  acts out the sentence . 
  • Make combinations of the templates using coordinated subjects and/or adjectives, e.g.: 

“The hat but not the ball is red but not spotty “.

  1. Take turns to create sentences matching these combine templates, while the other person draws / colours in .
  2. When accurate, remove templates; bring back to check responses. 
  1. Repeat stages a-f using ‘or’ .
  • Subj NP + verb, e.g. “The cow or the sheep is running.” 
  • Verb phrase, e.g. “The cow is running or
  • Subj NP + adjective, e.g. “The cow or the sheep is black. “
  • Adjective Phrase, e.g. “The cow is black or” #
  •  
  1. Explain that when the phrase contains ‘or,’ only one but either of the ideas is true.
