You will need:

  • SHAPE CODING app or laminated shapes: 1 large and 2 small ovals, is/are + modal diamond, hexagon and cloud.
  • Black and white pictures for colouring.
  • Small figures and toys, e.g. animals, characters, people, vehicles, furniture.
  • Photos or photocards for object/people description.

Intervention steps:

 

  1. Introduce the templates showing coordination of NPs in subject position, e.g.:

the cow are jumping

  1. Relate the coordinated subject to the question word Who. Discuss how and means both NPs are carrying out the action.
  2. Take turns to produce sentences using and while the other person acts out the sentence (you may need to revisit using plural auxiliary for coordinated Noun Phrases (see AG3).
  3. When accurate, remove templates, bring back to check responses.
  4. Introduce coordination of NPs in subject position with adjectives, e.g.ball the hat and are red
  5. Relate the coordinated subject to the question word Who. Discuss how and means both NPs have the feature of the adjective.
  6. Take turns to produce sentences using and while the other one draws / colours in the sentence.
  7. When accurate, remove templates, bring back to check responses.
